Ikaho Onsen is one of the most renowned hot spring towns, alongside Kusatsu Onsen, in Gunma Prefecture. The iconic 365-step stone stairs runs through the town center and is lined with ryokan inns. Easy access from Tokyo makes a good day trip and most inns open their baths to non-guests. Strolling in the town, you will be transported to the atmospheric era of Taisho (1912-1926).
The town has a variety of shops offering light meals and confections, and is actually the birthplace to 'onsen manju', a brown bun filled with sweet red bean paste, which is sold in most of onsen towns. Sample some of onsen munju and compare the difference of taste.
