This open-air museum on the western outskirts of Tokyo displays historical buildings of the city that have great cultural value. Put the word 'museum' in quotes because this is actually a huge theme park with relocation and reconstruction of the original buildings ranging from the late Edo to early Showa period.

The exhibits are divided into three areas - the historical buildings including a prime minister's residence and a guest house, the town with artisans and merchants of old Tokyo, the residential space both modern and old-fashioned. You can walk through these buildings to get a feel of what life was like in each era.

When you go there, it is highly recommended to drop in at the nearby Ghibli Museum.
