"The Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art" in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, was opened on 23 October 1974.
Since the Museum is one- storied (partly two- storied) ,all galleries have wide space and are arranged on the flat floor.
As to the exterior of the Museum, the roofs, shaped with geometrically straight lines, are covered with natural slate, and the outer walls are decorated with special red ceramic brick of Tokoname.

The museum collects works by artists who are related to Chiba Prefecture and who are both from domestic and international sources focusing on modern and contemporary art. Especially, it systematically collects works by the artists who are connected with the Prefecture of Chiba such as Chu Asai who participated in a scene as a pioneer of westernstyle painting, his pupils and surrounding artists, and artists such as Hotsuma Katori and Shinobu Tsuda, metalworkers who strove for development in the Japanese modern crafts scene.

The Chiba Prefectural Museum holds various exhibitions, such as exhibitions of its collections according to specific themes and special exhibitions of artworks from outside the Museum, in which various kinds of works of both Japan and foreign countries are introduced.
In addition, the museum holds' lecture meetings, workshops in order to interest the public in and to deepen their appreciation of arts. The public have access to books on art at the reference room and to the video library. At the studios, various art courses on Japanese-style and Western-style paintings, sculptures, craft, calligraphy and print are provided for the public throughout the year so that they may experience the pleasure of creation.
