Hakodate's crowning gem is the view of the harbor city at night from the top of Mr. Hakodate. Most believe that the view is not only one of the top three night views in Japan (the other two being Kobe and Nagasaki) but one of the top three in the entire world, competing with Hong Kong and Naples.
At night, the twinkling city lights on hourglass-shaped Hakodate contrast the dark water on both sides, and the black expanse of nearby sea, from June to December, is studded with lamps on squid fishing boats.
The daytime expansive vista is also spectacular. A ropeway takes you up to the top in three minutes. The mountain, with a height of 334m and a circumference of 9km, is not very big and shaped like a crouching cow seen from a distance.

Along with Naples and Hong Kong, this is one of the three great nightscapes of the world, according to the Japanese anyway. The Japanese call this place the 'million dollar night view' and rightfully so- the sea and the strips of land protruding from Hokkaido make this a perfect view, and one of the must-see sites of the colorful Hakodate area.
Personally, I like this place better in the early mornings as you can walk up the mountain when the cable car isn't operating. The mountain is only 334 meters so it'll take you about a hour and half(or a bit more..) from the Hakodate station.
