This 90km-long seasonal route passes over a 3,000m lofty peak by varied means of transportation including a train, a rope way, cable-cars, tunnel trolleys, busses and your own feet. The route connects Tateyama (elevation 475m) in Toyama Prefecture and Shinano-omachi in Nagano Prefecture (elevation 713m) with a straight-line distance of 25km and passes an area at an altitude of 2,450m. The one-way trip takes at least 6 hours.

The route, open from mid-April to mid-November, offers an exciting scenery of mountains, a deep dam and alpine plants. One of the most famous spots is the highest point Murodo where you go through a 500m-long bus road flanked with snow walls, which remains as high as 20m in spring. A short trek from here takes to Japan's highest onsen. Private cars are not allowed for the trolley and bus sections.
