World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

Incredible wooden castle. Stunningly beautiful. There are options for English guided tours, about three hours long starting at 9 (I believe) and 13. You can go into the castle itself all the way to the shrine at the top. Highly recommend a day trip if you have time and stay around Osaka/Kyoto. Can also easily be combined with a trip to Kobe since it's on the same rail line.

A stunning castle and World Heritage Site. Do make sure you arrive before 4pm as this is the last entry time before the castle closes at 5pm. In the evenings they have light shows, so it's nice to come back for an outside view. Just opposite the castle there is a Kurogoma soft serve (black sesame), which is really tasty!

As you can expect from a ancient Japanese castle it looks amazing in it's white color.
The only downside is that while it looks great in the fall it's considered one of the best places to enjoy the cherry blossoms, but wrong season so...
Still it's a great place for a short visit, 1000 yen entry and few minutes away from the train station so it's even an option for a quick stop on the way somewhere else.

Himeji castle is a wonderful place! It's stunning, beautifully kept, and interesting to wander around and see all the different defensive measures.
Unfortunately it's not suitable for those with accessibility issues as there are a lot of very steep steps, so do be aware of this.

A beautiful castle. There are some exhibitions inside but minimal. None of the "rooms" is furnished, but you can see the internal lay out. You can go all the way to the top floor, but beware of the steep steps. Nice place to take loads of pictures.
