World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

The castle is absolutely breathtaking. When you enter the grounds you have to make your way to the castle which is surrounded by beautiful gardens and stairways made of stone. Taking photos of the castle was so easy because every angle was beautiful. I was surprised you could actually go inside the castle. But be prepared for a lot of stairs as there are over 8 floors in the castle. Will definitely come back here if I ever get the chance.

We spent a day exploring Himeji Castle and the adjacent gardens. My words can't do it justice.
An early start gave us lots of time to explore the bailey and outbuildings almost on our own. By the time we approached the main keep, there was a pretty steady flow of people - on a sunny Monday in early November.
Every view in and of the castle is terrific.
The gardens are just a few extra yen when added on to the castle and are delightful.

Majestic and impressive castle. Good thing that they preserved it well. But since we didn’t come with a guide, need to google up to learn some historic facts. Better if there are options to rent an audio guide for tourists.

Beautiful castle. Preserved well. One of the best in Japan. Looking at the castle from distance is stunning. Walking inside the castle, you feel the history of one of the top family in Japan. I spent 4 hours in there.

Easy to get up to. Hand rails available. Shoes must be taken off before going inside castle & going barefoot is best as socks can be slippery. Gorgeous views & beautiful castle.
