Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.

Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

Very very impressive, to think that they could build something like that in that time. 6 floors up, the woodwork, the roofing, the water system, just everything. Be prepared to walk and climb steep staircases, you'll see this magnificent building in all its glory. The size and the history behind it. I recommend that you visit this site when you are in the area. It will be well with your time.

If you're staying in the Kansai Region (Osaka, Kyoto, etc.) Himeji Castle is fairly accessible and is considered to be one of the nicest castles in Japan. The ride from Osaka on the bullet train for instance is only about 30 minutes. Locating the castle from the station is quite easy as you can just follow the crowds down the sidewalk for the 10 to 15 minute walk or so. There are a variety of eating places and shopping on the way to the castle as well so you could grab a bite before or after sightseeing at the castle.

As for the castle grounds, they are huge and include not only the castle but gardens and a tea house. The gardens are absolutely breathtaking during the cherry blossom season as the trees line the pond. Overall, I find this castle to be a great stop on a Japan tour.

We decided to stop in Himeji to visit the castle on our way from Osaka to Hiroshima and were not disappointed. This stunning castle is one of the 12 ‘original’ castles in Japan. The beautiful white colour also makes it stand out from other castles. The outer buildings are also standing and well preserved. We did notice little signs everywhere which linked to an augmented reality (AR) app for added tour experience but were unable to download it as it was only on the Japanese Store and couldn’t change it on our devices. If you can’t fit staying in the town of Himeji into your itinerary, please try to at least stop for a few hours or the day as the Shinkansen stop here, the castle is only a short walk from the station up the main road with lots of shops and restaurants.

Great experience ! The castle has been well maintained. We went there during autumn so the ginkgo leaves along the road were all yellow. The view from the upper stairs of the castle was nice as well. My 76-year-old father had no trouble climbing the stairs in the castle since it was built properly with the handle for the elderly. Don’t forget to visit the garden next to the castle. It was hugeeee and had a beautiful autumn leaves there. We had to take a taxi back to the station since we had already walked too much once we finished visiting both places.

One of the beautiful places I’ve been to in Japan. It is well maintained and beautiful. Definitely worth going. Although it is pretty dark inside and not much setting to see but the view from the top floor is nice. I just enjoyed resting and admiring the castle from the bench on the grounds. It is a bit far from Osaka/Kyoto. About 1.5-2 hours so be sure to get on the super rapid train and it’ll take you less than an hour
