World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

Remarkable structure and worth visiting if you’re passing through Himeji.
Easily enough to find as you step off at the train station, head for the Himeji exits and you’ll see this grand structure a short 1km walk down the road.
Manicured gardens greet you as you make your way through the castle grounds.
Shame you can’t take drone shots though.

As all know, Himeji Castle is one of the beauties that no one can miss, but what's more is her history. Really advise visitors to search for the story and myths about the castle before going. This will certainly allow you to appreciate it in the best way ever!

Truly beautiful place, friendly staff all over and just a joy to go to. Much better than Osaka Castle as it's still like original inside. Worth the trip

Such a magnificent castle! Excellently preserved. Tons of people visiting! Luckily we visited in the spring. Otherwise, the atmosphere would have been suffocated in the summer for sure! However, it was absolutely rewarding from the strenuous and steep climb for 6 stories! The view was certainly breathtaking!!! Highly recommended!

Very impressive building, you can go around the inside and outside of the entire grounds, it is a bit of a climb though. Great views from the top of Himeji. They have displays in English for the few exhibits explaining the history of the castle. 1000 yen entry fee
