World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

By far one of the best castles that I have ever visited in Japan. The workers are very helpful and guide you through the castle with ease. The stairs are very narrow as your going up and down the floors within the castle. The views of the castle grounds are amazing from the top floor.

One of the last real Japanese castle that left in Japan.
You can find some guides that are giving the tour for free.
Don't expect to see any items, it's not a museum and the castle is empty.
But you can visit the building and go on top.

You need to go in and feel the raw wood in your hands, walk barefoot inside ... and feel at the time when people have value!!

Absolutely beautiful castle with a great view. Lots of areas to walk around in but the line to get inside was kind of long (during Covid shutdown the Japanese tourists spiked here)

Before reaching the front giant gate, you will pass a wooden bridge that was built above the river.
After passing the gate, spacious land was right in front of you, the castle was quite far on the right side. It was a bit hilly prior entering the castle, you need to take off foot wear n wearing 'shoes' provided in order to protect the wooden floor. The castle shape was long, mostly made of thick wood, there were rooms on the right side. A bit dark inside as it is using natural light only.
On the left side of the castle, there were a nice garden, well maintained too.
