World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

A stunning and huge castle a short walk from the main train station. Just be aware that if you visit the main keep it involves six flights of extremely steep ladder like wooden stairs, you will also need to navigate the stairs in flip flop type slippers whilst carrying your own shoes - not for the faint hearted. This is an unmissable historic site though.

Beautiful! They have information brochures in different languages (even Filipino!) so pick up yours as you get in. The castle is beautiful and well-preserved. Allow at least two hours for visiting to thoroughly go around the castle grounds.

This castle is really big and monumental which can be viewed from pretty far. Actually once you get from railway station you immediately notice it.
There are like two main parts. Keep and residential part. Keep has got six floors (plus basement) with steep stairways so if you want to climb to top floor it will take some energy (but it's not so difficult as it seems).
Residential part is interesting to observe how people lived there.
And in between there is some garden with nice views of castle itself.

Must-visit in Himeji, the first world heritage site in Japan. Full of history and stories, and the architecture itself is worth admiring and well preserved. Plenty of multilingual pamphlets free to take. Amazing feeling to be in the same place as the ancient generals and historic figures hundreds of years ago.

Beautiful castle, worth the visit although not quite accessible from the usual main cities of Osaka or Kyoto. Will need to factor in at least half a day if coming by train from one of the main cities. Visited the interior, and though there were limited things to see inside, it gave a good feel of how well-defended these castles were in the past. Highlight was definitely the postcard landscape of the castle.
