World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

Amazing Japanese castle! Unlike many others around the country, this castle is an original. It survived WW2, though entered a state of disrepair afterwards. The restoration is very sympathetic to what would have been the original design.
The main keep is very photogenic, with some very good spots for photos labelled on the provided maps. You can enter the keep and climb to the very top. Views inside are somewhat disappointing, though, as Himeji city is a post-WW2 concrete construction. Still, the nearby mountains (on a clear day) are beautiful.
Access from the railway station is very simple -- a 10-minute walk up the main road (with the keep clearly visible).
Tip: Get the combined ticket (with entry to the gardens) for 1040 yen from the ticket counter rather than the 1000 yen castle ticket -- the gardens are worth a visit!
Note: Pretty much none of this would be wheelchair-friendly.

I stopped here on the way to Hiroshima. It was located just one kilometer away from the station, which is walkable for me. The garden area was quite large, an amazing view of the castle can be seen in pretty much every spot of the garden. The castle is unusually bright and pretty.

Amazing castle. Read the history before you start the tour to prime your imagination. The views are amazing from the top. The woodwork is incredible, so clean and maticulous. They ask you to wear slippers and carry your shoes in a bag. They even have extra large ones for foreigners. 😂 Well worth the effort to get there. It's a nice walk from the train station. You don't need to take the bus.

Highly recommend! This castle looks so pretty and shining on a sunny day because of its white walls. Stairs to climb up to the top of the main keep (Daitenshu) are very steep and narrow, but the views are pretty good from the top.

After two months traveling through Japan, Himeji Castle is the one we liked the most! We recommend you to make the path surrounding the castle, it is beautiful that it is surrounded by nature! a very nice and quiet place to spend a single day, as a couple, with family or with friends. Do not miss the White Heron of Japan!
