World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

Amazing place. Hard work though the staircases are mostly steep but thankfully not many between floors. Windows are open to the elements so on a hot day (like then) it was blissful!
Oh important, no shoes allowed. Take off and they supply a carrier bag for you to carry them, so make sure you have good socks on!
Views are impressive albeit a little tricky to take photos due to wires.

The largest castle in Japan. The castle itself and its grounds are extremely beautiful, although the inside of the castle seemed a little bare. I was expecting more exhibitions or activities inside. Really stunning nonetheless. Friendly and helpful staff also. Well worth the visit.

It was one of the most incredible strategic castles.
It's very beautiful and amazing both appearance and functioning (back then).
There's also a volunteer tour guide will guide you through all details, most of them are elderly BUT MAN!! their English is incredible! One of a German guy in my group can't even speak English as well as my guide!!

As a historical landmark and UNESCO world heritage site Himeji castle fulfills and then exceeds every expectation I had for it. While the exterior of the castle itself is magnificent the interior is also something to behold with is well thought out defences and impressive woodworking.
The grounds surrounding the Castle are also magnificent and provide splendid views of the castle and surrounding town of Himeji.
One warning though, if you are not great with ascending or descending steep steps it might be wise to avoid climbing the main keep.

This castle is almost like a small town on its own. The last refurbished project was completed in 2009. If you are into Japanese feudal history, you’ll understand the significance of this place. Eat before you arrive. There’s little to feed you once you’re in.
