World Heritage: Himeji Castle4.8
Himeji Castle is one of very few original castles in Japan that have survived wars, fires and earthquake without reconstruction. The architecture, built on a hill in early 17th century, comprises well preserved 83 buildings, including the castle keep, watch towers and gates, which are ingeniously arranged with stone walls and moats for bristling defense. The stately white form of the castle gives it a moniker, white heron.
Major renovation works are being carried out on the castle keep's roof and walls until March 2015.

Himeji Castle may be the oldest castle in Japan that hasn't been destroyed and rebuilt. The white roof tiles give it the distinct appearance. I went when the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom. There were some trees already in full bloom, and it makes for a great picture with the castle in the background. There are large crowds if you want to venture up the castle. You will also need to take off your shoes. Spend some time in the open area after the castle and enjoy a view of the city.

An amazing historical place to visit. Very beautiful, grateful, and iconic especially in the cherry blossom season. It's very busy all the time. Getting to this place is very convenient. You can take high-speed trains or local trains, get off at Himeji station, and walk about 20 minutes. Many shops and restaurants are along the way to the castle. Highly recommend.

We didn't pay the entrance fee to go in, as I was carrying a load of baggage and didn't intend to hang around for long. But even walking around outside it's impressive. We were travelling on the train between Tokyo and Hiroshima, so this made a nice stop-off along the way.

Visit Himeji Castle during cherry blossom season beginning of April. It's beautiful and filled with families having picnics in the park. Lovely brides take photos with the blossoms. Pricing is reasonable and you can hire an English speaking guided tour. Depending on how many people are there, you can wait up to an hour to enter. Give yourself one hour and fifteen minutes minimum to explore the castle grounds once inside. It is very easy to get to as a traveler. Simply take the JR line to Himeji station and follow signs within the station that direct you to the castle. Once you exit you can see the castle from the station. It's an easy 20 minute walk. If it is raining head to the shopping street under a roof on your right to make your way. Along the way you may find little shops for food and assorted items. Try some matcha tea while your there.

Beautiful castle! If you are visiting Osaka it is easy to come to this place. You can take the JR bullet train and it takes only 33 minutes from Shin-Osaka Station. You should go to the top of the castle to have beautiful views around the castle.
