Maruyama Zoo , about 3km west of the center of Sapporo, is part of Maruyama Park involving primeval forests. The zoo displays some 180 species and has indoor viewing facilities, making it "a comfortable spot both in summer and winter."
Active renovation is going on and new facilities specializing in Asia and reptiles and amphibians are recently added. The zoo has been quite successful in nurturing polar bears and other rare species, and you can see different new-born babies every year. The zoo offers a daily tour to show and experience animal feeding.

Lovely place full with animals all around the world. Open even on New Year's Day. Nice place to hang out while exploring the animal world after visiting the Hokkaido Shrine. There is a cafe inside the zoo which charge reasonably. There is also a 7-11 where u can get some snacks.

Loved it! Not that kind of sad zoos. 99% of the Animals seems to be happy with where they are despite the freezing weather. You can feel the good vibes in the air. Highly recommended

Great zoo! I specially love polar bear, wolf, hippo, alligator swimming zones. I admit that some cages are small comparing with foreign zoos, but summer time many animals enjoy much bigger area outside!
Highly recommended this zoo!

Great zoo, we came here for the polar bears and weren't disappointed. The entrance is very cheap - 600 yen - and they have a lot of animals. The enclosures are large, and quite a lot of enrichment.
It was winter so we saw the polar bears rub around in the snow, the wolves with full manes and tigers. Very recommended as you can get very close to the animals, and they even have underwater tunnels where you can watch the seals and bears swim.

It is not big but well maintained and organized. Lots to see with kids and not so overwhelmed. Plenty of restrooms and places to sit and relax. Worth to visit.
