Maruyama Zoo , about 3km west of the center of Sapporo, is part of Maruyama Park involving primeval forests. The zoo displays some 180 species and has indoor viewing facilities, making it "a comfortable spot both in summer and winter."
Active renovation is going on and new facilities specializing in Asia and reptiles and amphibians are recently added. The zoo has been quite successful in nurturing polar bears and other rare species, and you can see different new-born babies every year. The zoo offers a daily tour to show and experience animal feeding.

It was much more than I thought.
It was snowing , freezing cold and windy . Thought my kids will not like my half day plan going to this zoo. BUT it was total fun visit.
Kids wanted to stay for more.
Winter time special indoor cages were the best.
Underwater observing window were awesome. Underwater aquarium was awesome. Carrying zoom lenses would be the best for photography lovers.
It was Friday ( weekday ) and bad weather ( it matters may be).Not much people around .
Big zoo boundary as well parking lots ample.
Polar bear was the famous one out there.
Very playful mood it was that day. Lucky us.
Note : check the pic for the entry fees.
Parking I paid 700¥ for half day.

A fun zoo with a nice selection of interesting animals. The reptile house was particularly cool. Also a very cheap entry price. Some of the enclosures do feel a bit to small for the animals housed in them however.

Love the zoo and I think it is fantastic. The white bear is the mascot and eating the fish is great event to see. It is a must zoo place to visit in Sapporo.

Great place to be if you do not want to travel too far away from Sapporo with kids. We took the subway which was only 2 stops from where we stayed n took a nice stroll through the Maruyama Park. The way the zoo house the tropical animals during winter was impressive to us. But sad to see most animals are alone n confined to small habitat. A lot of toilet facilities, resting areas and eateries in the zoo which is great! Free admission for kids, yay!

As it was winter, the zoo was not crowded. All the tropical animals were indoors. Am very impressed by the cleanliness of the zoo surroundings and animal enclosure, well taken care by the zoo staff. Nice easy and enjoyable walking in the crisp cool air.
