Maruyama Zoo , about 3km west of the center of Sapporo, is part of Maruyama Park involving primeval forests. The zoo displays some 180 species and has indoor viewing facilities, making it "a comfortable spot both in summer and winter."
Active renovation is going on and new facilities specializing in Asia and reptiles and amphibians are recently added. The zoo has been quite successful in nurturing polar bears and other rare species, and you can see different new-born babies every year. The zoo offers a daily tour to show and experience animal feeding.

I have mixed feelings about this zoo. I can appreciate the role that zoos play in animal conservation but it can be a little heartbreaking to see animals in captivity, especially when they're in small enclosures. The polar bears were why we went, and being the star attraction, they had the best enclosures. The reptile house was great too but i was pretty sad for the African animals as the Hokkaido climate really is ill suited to them. Having said that, entry is cheap and it's still worth a visit. I do think they are trying and hopefully they can upgrade more enclosures to make the animals more comfortable.

A nice zoo to visit if you can spare the time at Sapporo. The highlights were snow leopard and the lion. The design of the zoo was good as it intended for visitors to have a good view of the animals. Will be good for family and kids.

This is a medium size zoo but it is really beautiful during sakura season. We recommend to visit this zoo and the park also. You won't regret visiting this zoo.

The Sapporo Maruyama Zoo looks like a residential area from the entrance. The animals are kept in house-like 'cages' and seemed to be in hybernated mode in this cold winter season.
I went into the Official Station of the Zoo to get some coffee. The station is a cafe cum souvenir store. I got myself a cup of coffee and some soft bread.
There is no toilet in the station but is available at the entrance to the Zoo.
We all left after an hour at the Zoo.

WOOOOW....Probably the best zoo i have ever been to. Smell? the only thing i could smell was how clean it was. Bonus...you can actually been in the same room with the Red Pandas. I really wanted to pet one but the little guy sure let me know he would chew my face off if i tried. A very nice walk in the winter time to visit. Not much for food, so i recommend not going there hungry.
