Maruyama Zoo , about 3km west of the center of Sapporo, is part of Maruyama Park involving primeval forests. The zoo displays some 180 species and has indoor viewing facilities, making it "a comfortable spot both in summer and winter."

Active renovation is going on and new facilities specializing in Asia and reptiles and amphibians are recently added. The zoo has been quite successful in nurturing polar bears and other rare species, and you can see different new-born babies every year. The zoo offers a daily tour to show and experience animal feeding.

It’s a very nice zoo with a good collection of animals. Was probably my first time seeing a polar bear; wish it had snowed so I could see the animals more in the natural habitats. Some buildings for tropical animals have heating system all year round to maintain the temperature I believe. I arrived at the zoo before 11am on a Sunday so the number of people was tolerable, and left at around 1pm to witness very long queues at ticket booths located at both entrances. Be wise in choosing your time to visit the zoo!

Most animals were lively at time of our visit. Place well kept. Nice that we can bring our own food and many indoor places to have a picnic.

Quite like this zoo located in the east of Sapporo. Despite its small size, it has quite a lot of different animal species and most of them has indoor resting/sleeping area and outdoor exercising area.
The newly just re-opened elephant enclosure was closed when I went last week, but saw on the news that it has indoor viewing area with huge glass panels to see elephant swimming... Such a spectacular scene.
Go there on a weekday early morning to avoid crowd.

We recommend this place when compare to the fukuoka and osaka zoo. The tourist can be close to the animal you love. It's a beautiful view of the park. Only 600 yen for adult. The high light of zoo is red panda and polar bear. By the way, soft cream so delicious.

This park was amazing and fun. I’d highly recommend seeing this place while visiting Hokkaido. And in the winter there is a ice skating rink right outside one of the exits.
