This tranquil onsen village, located a 1-hour northeast from Mount Aso, is one of the prettiest hot spring resort in Japan. Along a gorge stand a cluster of two dozen traditional Japanese inns, and the area is free of massive concrete and colorful signage. Instead, the townscape features wooden walls, stone steps, bridges and a small shrine.
This resort is also famous for cave baths and riverside outdoor baths. An onsen passport (nyuto tegata) allows day trippers access to the baths of three different ryokan. A stroll around this compact village is very pleasant in yukata (light summer kimono) and geta (wooden clogs), both provided by each inn.
