Gero Onsen, located along the Hida River, is the largest hot spring resort in Gifu Prefecture. The waters flow out from the riverbed, providing hot spring sources to 40 plus ryokan inns and hotels in the area close to JR Gero Station. There is a symbolic open-air pool on the riverside, a mixed bath free of charge but requiring bathing suits.
The resort was originally situated in the mountains, but an earthquake in the 13 century changed the hot spring point to the current area. Touristy sights include a walkway to Onsenji Temple lined with retro gas lamps and artistic monuments, and an open-air museum of gassho-zukuri farmhouses, which are most well-known in the Shirakago region.
